Harrison, Mr. Richard Henry

Manchester - Graveside services for Mr. Richard Henry Harrison, age 81 of Manchester will be conducted at 12:00 noon Thursday, November 6 at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Neal Glass, pastor of Manchester€™s First United Methodist Church, officiating. Visitation with the Harrison family will be Wednesday from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at Coffee County Funeral Chapel.
Richard H. Harrison, long-time attorney in Coffee County and former County commissioner, died Tuesday at his Manchester residence after a long illness. Harrison practiced law in both Tullahoma and Manchester since graduating from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1951. For several years in Tullahoma he was a law partner with the late J. O. McMahan, former Commissioner of Public Welfare in the Governor Gordon Browning administration. Most recently, he was associated with the firm of Harrison and Kirkpatrick in Manchester. A Manchester city attorney in the late fifties and early sixties, Harrison also served on the Coffee County Library Board, and in the early 1970€™s, on the Coffee County Commission. He was treasurer on PLAN (Public Library Action Now) from 1969 until 1972, a fundraising effort that resulted in the construction of the current Manchester branch of the Coffee County Public Library. Long active in Democratic party politics, he was appointed Coffee County co-manager of the gubernatorial campaign of former Chattanooga Mayor Rudy Olgiati in 1962. He made unsuccessful bids for County General Sessions Judge in the late 1960s and also for County Juvenile Judge in 1983. Harrison, a native of Murfreesboro, was the son of the late Walter Davis Harrison, Jr., and Martha Ellen Boyer Harrison. His wife of 54 years, the former Joan Prince of Tullahoma, died in 2005. He was educated at the MTSU Campus School, Murfreesboro Central High School, and earned a B.S. from Middle Tennessee State University and an LL.B. from Vanderbilt. He served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves. He is survived by two sons, Richard H. Harrison II, Longwood, Florida, and David J. Harrison, Manchester, and devoted caregivers, Teresa Perry, Faye Massey, and Jennifer Miller. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to one€™s favorite charity.
