James Gordon Jarrell

Manchester - Funeral services for James G. “Red” Jarrell, age 83 of Manchester, will be conducted Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 11:00 AM with Bro. Horace Lee Jacobs officiating services at Coffee County Funeral Chapel. Burial to follow in the Shady Grove Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Friday, January 21 from 3:00 until 9:00 PM at the funeral home. Mr. Jarrell passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at his home.
James G. “Red” Jarrell was born March 2, 1927 in Manchester to the late Frank Miller and Stella Rogers Jarrell. He was a member of the Summitville Church of Christ and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and farming. In earlier years he played football and basketball at Tennessee Tech University and was elected into the Tennessee Tech Sports Hall of Fame. While at Tech, he met and married Margaret McClure of Kingston, TN. After graduating, he began his career in Millington, TN where he taught and coached for two years. He then moved to Manchester in 1951 and coached football and basketball at the Central High School from 1951-1964. In 1964 he became Superintendent of Coffee County Schools until 1980 when he retired. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret McClure Jarrell; brothers, Lawson, Winfred, Billy, Sanford, and John Jarrell; sister, Ruth Rainey; and grandson, Luke Jarrell.His survivors include two sons, Stan (Lynne) Jarrell of Manchester, Russ (Jennifer) Jarrell of Shelbyville; daughter, Jackie Koss of Manchester; sisters, Irene Freeze of Manchester, Carolyn Williams of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Elizabeth Aaron of Nashville, and Albertine Jenkins of Richmond, VA; three grandsons, Ashley Jarrell, Zachry Jarrell, Seth Jarrell, four granddaughters, Katie Koss, Jillian Koss, Allison Jarrell, and Alexandria Jarrell.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Coffee County Education Association 1343 McArthur St. Manchester, TN 37355 Attn: Judy Spears and/or the Red and Margaret Jarrell Educational Scholarship Fund.
